Building upon the legacy of the Asian Pacific American Legal Center

Vice President of Program Development

Kathleen
Chuman
Kathleen Chuman is Vice President of Program Development at Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Los Angeles.

Kathleen has over 25 years of experience in the nonprofit field, in both civil rights and faith-based organizations, working in such areas as race relations, conflict transformation, community and youth development, and organizational management. While she started her career as a mediator at the Asian Pacific American Dispute Resolution Center (an organization closely affiliated Advancing Justice-LA), she was soon recruited to join Advancing Justice-LA’s staff to create the Leadership Development in Interethnic Relations (LDIR) program, which encouraged individuals to expand their notion of community, and provided specific skills building training to better prepare individuals to work in multicultural environments.  Kathleen developed the initial training curriculum for the program and graduated its first cohort just weeks after the civil unrest of 1992.

While Kathleen has worked in numerous positions within Advancing Justice-LA over the years, she has also worked at the Urban Leadership Institute of the Claremont School of Theology, where she served as both Associate Director and then Acting Director.  She also worked at World Vision where she led their community engagement strategy in Southern California, bringing different community stakeholders together to work toward child well-being, and developed an evaluation plan for World Vision's domestic programming. In 2015, Kathleen rejoined the Advancing Justice-LA staff as the Co-Director of Development where she focused primarily on securing the resources necessary to support its ongoing programming.

Kathleen has an MA in Urban Planning and a B.A. in Political Science from the University of California, Los Angeles.
