Asian Americans Advancing Justice - LA

Building upon the legacy of the Asian Pacific American Legal Center

About Health Access Project

Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities have rich and diverse cultures, languages, and health needs that are often invisible to our health system.

The Health Access Project (HAP) mobilizes our communities to advocate for their rights, lift their voices, and share their stories, so that we can build a more equitable and inclusive health system where all communities can thrive and live healthy lives.

HAP leads and engages in coalitions that work to increase access to health care for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPIs), low-income communities of color, limited-English proficient populations, and immigrant communities nationally through Action for Health Justice (AHJ), and statewide and locally through the Health Justice Network (HJN).

Our current projects:

  • Access to health coverage
  • Oral Health
  • Behavioral Health
  • Language rights

HAP’s current efforts focus on increasing access to health coverage through outreach, education, enrollment and advocacy, for AANHPIs and other communities of color. We work with a diverse group of HJN partner agencies and provide direct services to inform community members of health coverage options. HJN provides in language assistance to enroll community members into Covered California, Medi-Cal and/or county safety net programs.

In addition, HAP’s oral and behavioral health projects links us with multiple statewide and local organizations to better integrate oral & behavioral health with physical health. Working collaboratively with these organizations and with our HJN partners, we’re listening and learning from AANHPI community members in order to develop culturally and linguistically relevant education and outreach campaigns, as well as to advocate policy change to decrease access and utilization barriers.
