Advancing Justice-LA Litigation Director Receives Public Interest Achievement Award

LOS ANGELES -- Asian Americans Advancing Justice - Los Angeles (Advancing Justice-LA) litigation director Laboni Hoq was recognized by the South Asian Bar Association of North America (SABA) with a Public Interest Achievement Award. She was presented with the award at the SABA annual conference in New York City.
“I am incredibly honored to be recognized with this award,” said Laboni Hoq. “As difficult as our work has been in this new political environment, I am grateful to be among those who can dedicate ourselves to standing with and fighting for marginalized immigrant communities. I am also grateful to SABA and its members for supporting our work through grants and pro bono resources, which is particularly essential as community needs have grown exponentially.”
SABA North America’s public interest award celebrates individuals who show a deep commitment to serving the South Asian community and community-at-large. While at Advancing Justice-LA, Hoq has led many highly publicized cases in the areas of immigrants’ rights, race/national origin and religious discrimination, workers’ rights, and voting rights. Most recently, in 2016, Laboni led a team that obtained a $5 million settlement on behalf of class of over 400 Korean and Latino port truck drivers who were exploited under an unlawful independent contractor scheme.
Laboni’s fight for human and civil rights started long before she joined Advancing Justice-LA. Upon graduating from Columbia Law School, Laboni was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to work in South Africa to fight for the land ownership rights of indigenous groups. Since then, she has worked with several law firms, representing disadvantaged South Asian communities.
“Laboni has been a huge asset to not only this organization but the Asian American community as a whole,” said Stewart Kwoh, president and executive director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice - Los Angeles. “Her passion for justice is exceptional. We are delighted that the South Asian Bar Association is bestowing her with this much-deserved honor.”
