Advancing Justice-California Celebrates Signing of CA Values Act, SB 54, into Law

Asian Americans Advancing Justice – California (Advancing Justice-CA) applauds the signing of the California Values Act, SB 54, into law.  Authored by Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de León, SB 54 advances a number of urgently needed protections for immigrants in California against the Trump administration’s mass deportation policies.  With Governor’s Brown signature, California takes a significant step towards disentangling local law enforcement from immigration enforcement, thereby reducing the number of community members funneled into the cruel and inhumane immigration detention and deportation system.

Advancing Justice-CA, a partnership of Advancing Justice - Asian Law Caucus and Advancing Justice - Los Angeles, advocates for the civil and human rights of Asian Americans and other underserved communities to promote a fair and equitable society for all. In California, 463,310 Asian Americans are undocumented. This represents 1 out of 8 Asian immigrants in the State (13%) and nearly 1 out of 5 undocumented immigrants in the state (18%).

SB 54 will protect the safety and well-being of all Californians by ensuring that our state and local resources are not used to fuel mass deportations and our schools, libraries, hospitals, courts, and other public agencies remain accessible to all Californians.

"Advancing Justice-California celebrates the signing of SB 54 into law because it will significantly improve protections for immigrants in California, including ending the notorious 287(g) program, limiting transfers of community members from local law enforcement to immigration custody, and prohibiting local law enforcement from inquiring into or arresting based on immigration status.  This victory is the result of community organizing and immigrants bravely sharing their stories about being turned over to ICE at the hands of local law enforcement.  We look forward to working to pass more protections for immigrants throughout California in the years to come," stated Advancing Justice – Asian Law Caucus Policy Director Angela Chan.

"SB 54 puts necessary immigrant rights protections in place to defend and uphold our core American values from those who are trying to tear them down," stated Advancing Justice-California Policy Manager Andrew Medina. "Without SB 54, millions of Californians would live in fear for just going to work, attending school, or accessing vital services."

"The California Values Act delivers a significant victory during the Trump administration’s assault on immigrant communities. Amid an uncertain political climate, SB 54 creates stability and safety for all Californians," said Advancing Justice-LA Policy Director Betty Hung.
