Asian Student Reports Racial Slurs, Eggs Thrown at Him at USC

Monday, March 7, 2016
EXPOSITION PARK, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- An investigation is underway into a possible hate crime at the University of Southern California after a suspect used racial slurs and eggs as a weapon against a student.
USC's Cardinal Gardens is a student housing complex where coeds pay more than $10,000 a year to live. That is where business major Ivan Tsang said he was targeted with eggs and racial epithets over the weekend.

He posted pictures of the egg assault on his Facebook page.

"We see a lot of things being reported on social media and really calling out what they feel may be discrimination against Asians or Asian Americans," said Karin Wang of Asian Americans Advancing Justice.

Wang said the incident is just one of several campus discrimination cases over recent years.

The USC administration was quick to condemn the incident and is now working with the LAPD to determine what its next step should be.

Varun Soni, the dean of religious life at the campus, heads up a task force of inclusion and diversity for USC. He said this is one of the most diverse campuses in the country.

"Just because we have the diverse demographics on campus, that doesn't mean we don't have work to do to create an inclusive campus," he said. "And that's the work we're focused on now."
