New #ValueOurFamilies Coalition Unites to Defend Family Immigration and Protect Family Unity

As June wraps up and Immigrant Heritage Month comes to a close, the Value Our Families coalition flexed a lot of organizing muscle throughout the month to fend off the Trump administration’s sustained attacks on immigrant and refugee families.

Paul Ryan Gives Stage for More Attacks on Immigrants and Family Reunification with Floor Vote, Didn’t Care If He Had the Votes to Pass It Or Not

The only consensus Speaker Paul Ryan got with his immigration bill today was to let anti-immigrant politicians openly attack and scapegoat immigrants and their families on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Despite 193-231 Failed Floor Vote, Rep. Mimi Walters Votes YES for Goodlatte’s Anti-Immigrant, Anti-Family Bill, Goes On Record As A Soldier for Trump’s Mass Deportation Force

In a purely symbolic, political act, House leaders forced a floor vote on Rep. Goodlatte’s “Securing America’s Future Act” to appease the extremists in their caucus. Although the Senate says they won’t take up either the Goodlatte or the Ryan-Trump immigration bills, supporters in the House have scheduled the Ryan-Trump bill for a vote tomorrow.

Trump’s Executive Order STILL Jails Children and Their Parents

Donald Trump is trying to clean up the mess he made after months of separating children from their families and locking them up in detention camps. He may have caved in under political pressure today with this executive order, but Trump and his administration are still responsible for putting children in cages.

Any Politician That Supports the Goodlatte and Ryan-Trump Bills Endorses Trump’s Policy to Separate Children from Their Families At the Border

It’s a moment of truth for House members this week when they vote on two anti-immigrant bills. The Goodlatte and Ryan-Trump bills essentially do the same thing: both create anunderclass of immigrant young people, both grossly reduce legal immigration and stop hundreds of thousands of families from reuniting with their loved ones, botheliminates the diversity visa program which would disproportionately harm Black immigrants, both hire more border agents to militarize our communities, both further exploit farmworkers, both strip due process and protections from children and asylum seekers and most of all, both buildTrump’s wall and empowers his mass deportation machine.

Goodlatte’s Anti-Immigrant, Anti-Family Bill Exposes How Out of Touch House Republicans Are with America

Speaker Paul Ryan has promised his caucus they will vote on at least two anti-immigrant bills next week, as House Republicans come to a stand-off on a Dream Act last night. Outside the Capitol steps, U.S. Representatives Judy Chu (CA-27), Jim Costa (CA-16), Rep. Barbara Lee (CA-13),  and Jimmy Gomez (CA-34) joined dozens of immigrants, families, Dreamers, and their allies to oppose the Goodlatte bill, or any other legislation that gives fuel to Trump’s mass deportation machine.

Asian Americans Advancing Justice Urges Congress to Intervene for Nepali TPS Holders

Today, the Department of Homeland Security announced that it will terminate temporary protected status (TPS) for Nepal in one year on June 24, 2019. At that time, approximately 9,000 TPS holders will lose their work authorization and be at risk of being swept up in ICE’s aggressive deportation raids.

Immigrant Rights Advocates Sue ICE to Stop Illegal Incarceration of Vietnamese Refugees

Vietnamese refugees have filed a nationwide class action lawsuit challenging their detention by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).  Since March 2017, ICE began picking up dozens of Vietnamese refugees and subjecting them to prolonged and indefinite detention in violation of federal law. Many of them were young children or teenagers when they came to the United States fleeing profound hardship and political persecution. As ICE continues to carry out its aggressive detention campaign, between 8,000 and 10,000 Vietnamese Americans are at risk of being unlawfully detained.
