George Takei and John Cho Urge You to “Voice Your Vote” on June 7th

Tuesday, May 31st 2016

As we close out Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (APAHM) today, we urge Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders (AANHPIs) across our great state to vote in this critical election year.

Watch our new "Voice Your Vote" PSA featuring John Cho, George Takei, and others.

Only one more week until California’s primary election on Tuesday, June 7th!

During APAHM, many of us pause to reflect on our personal and community histories. As a community, we have experienced grave injustices, such as exclusion and mass incarceration. And even today, we fight to be seen as more than the “perpetual foreigner” and as truly American. One way to change this is to #VoiceYourVote!

To remind us of the power of our vote as Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, Advancing Justice is proud to partner with APIAVote to release an important video featuring George Takei, John Cho, Constance Wu, Vincent Rodriguez III, Sonal Shah, and Joey “Q” Quenga. Advancing Justice extends special appreciation to APIAVote, Imprenta Communications Group, The Great Company, and Asian Pacific American Leadership Foundation for making the video possible.

In California in particular, AANHPIs have an opportunity to make a real difference in many races, given our growing numbers. In 2012, Asian American voters exceeded the margin of victory in 38 legislative districts across California. In 2016, AANHPI voters will comprise 11 percent of the state’s voters (1.7 million voters) and are poised to make a significant impact. Please share this powerful video with friends and family and #VoiceYourVote!

What’s on my ballot?

With only one week left, you must already be registered to vote to participate on June 7th (if you are unsure about your registration status, you can check it online here). Even if you are registered, remember that political parties do not allow everyone to vote for their presidential candidates during the primary, so please check the rules of the party you intend to vote for.

Although most attention has been focused on the Presidential primaries, the June 7th election will also help choose finalists for other key races, like California’s first open U.S. Senate seat in 24 years, and decide local races and ballot measures. If you are not sure what else will be on your ballot, an online tool that shows local ballots based on your address is available.

How can I help?

While AANHPI voters hold great potential as an electorate, AANHPIs are not frequently targeted by mainstream candidates and parties and have correspondingly lower voter registration and turnout rates. By June 7th, as part of the non-partisan “Your Vote Matters” campaign, Advancing Justice-LA and 20 AANHPI community organizations are making 20,000 non-partisan calls to AANHPI voters in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. By November, we plan to double that number. Also, we will be training and sending volunteers to monitor poll sites, to ensure that limited English speaking voters are able to access legally-required bilingual materials in order to vote.

To volunteer this week or for more information, contact Shelly Chen, our voter engagement coordinator, at [email protected], or visit the Your Vote Matters website.

Our power is in our vote. #VoiceYourVote on June 7th!
