On December 14, Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Orange County (Advancing Justice-OC) revealed its new home in Santa Ana, California. The new office location is shared with The Cambodian Family, a long-standing nonprofit organization serving the community in Orange County. Advancing Justice-OC is now poised to better serve the Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) population in Orange County.

Advancing Justice-Los Angeles has been working in Orange County since the 1990s. The OC offices first opened its doors in 2006 in Garden Grove to serve low-income and recent AANHPI immigrants. Since then, the Advancing Justice-OC’s breadth of services has expanded.

Orange County is home to the nation’s third largest Asian American population; further, AANHPIs make up 21% of the county’s overall population. The Asian American population in the region grew 41% between 2000-2010, compared to a mere 6% growth witnessed in the county overall. Needless to say, there is an ever-increasing need for services.

In recent years, our Orange County office has been making headway into the community. We’ve stood up against hate crimes, employment discrimination, and helped families with immigration and domestic violence issues. In 2016, we welcomed the office’s first regional director, Sylvia Kim, created two advisory councils, held our annual fundraising luncheon (gathering over 300 community partners and leaders), and increased our capacity for hosting community education events. In the new year, we’re already looking forward to: expanding our immigration and citizenship services, a January county-wide post-election community forum, and a February 18 mega citizenship clinic.

AANHPIs are becoming an undeniable force in Orange County. Together, we hope to create a unified voice among the AANHPI community and mark this important moment in the region’s history.
